The Garden in 2011

While we’ve always had a small garden of some sort, in 2011 we decided to really embrace growing our own food. We started by expanding our existing gardens with new raised beds so that we could grow a lot more stuff.  We ordered seeds from a supplier and started them in the growing cage. Our little seedlings filled the beds with swiss chard, lettuce, kale, zucchini, zucchini and more zucchini (which made delicious zucchini bread), beets, carrots, beans, peas and herbs. We even started an asparagus patch and Jonny grew artichokes. The harvesting was worth all the building, watering and seed starting – we got so many vegetables (even with the hail storm)! Not everything was perfect (I’m still disappointed with our tomatoes) but it was a great learning experience. Everything was cleaned up after we harvested the last kale and we’re waiting for spring 2012 to start all over again.

Here’s what the garden looked like through the summer: Start of June|End of June|Middle of July|End of July|August|September|
